I would draw a few graphics to show what would be allowed and what wouldn't when posting the comp. it would allow for creative freedom, faster asset output and more of a level play field in the graphics area.

What's that, Qube? You'd do the graphics for my game? That's damn kind of you :-)

Don't panic - I'd ask my buddy blinkok really :-)

I think purely lines would be difficult. I don't see any harm in allowing filled polygons. Not textures but flat colour.
Just my 2c

iWasAdam

lines is lines
filled polygons are not lines

from the arcades:
asteroids, major havok, spacewar, tempest, battle zone, red baron and many more...

think anything on the vectrex - hers a color version with examples

Derron

Not a visual style I enjoy.
I could do the "shading" with line commands too (so not filled polygons ... but a set of many line commands) but this is not what Qube seems to "plan". Am not a fan of these 70s or very early 80s arcade games and their visual style . I dislike these "show through" graphics (so not filled with black inside the outlines of the objects).
For me the "one button" limitation would be almost good enough. Vector lines is then another really "harsh" restriction. Maybe this makes game play choice a bit ... too limiting (of course only my POV).

Good luck and have fun you upcoming contestants. Of course I will feedback "critically" if some of you have worklogs then :p.

Somebody buy Derron a Vectrex lol.

Not sure on all the details yet but if I say filled polygons of a single colour are allowed then that just opens it up to untextured 3D modelling.

I'd like to level the play field a little so gameplay becomes more important spending half of your time creating graphical assets.

Ideas?

Until the next time.

I was waiting for this one....

I dont like sandwiches....
my keyboard doesn't have hamsters...
My mouse has just had babies...
I only eat round things...
can't we just use black oh and and white plus yellow, cause my dog like bananas?...
I love 3d but have only got some knitting...
My Boa constricts so I dont do restrictions...
I dont do duvets...
etc, etc...
;D

Qube ignore the whining \o/

blinkok

On second thought i guess that's ok. Focus on gameplay

DaiHard

So, to summarise, line graphics only, any colour but no fills. You can only use single button (spacebar, say) during gameplay, but anything goes for the intro/menus etc?

Scaremonger

One button and lines... So this is a 1D game then?

I lost the rest of the comments after Steve mentioned Vectrex. What a concept that was. And it had some really great games. Pity it never caught on - it was a really cool looking machine.

And I hereby vote that we make a new rule that Adam has to actually code his game with a one-button keyboard, just so we can hold him back and give the rest of us a chance :-)

A very cool machine, yes.  I remember seeing games like Asteroids, Battlezone and Tempest in the arcades, and a dedicated arcade machine or a Vectrex machine were the only machines that could accurately produce that wonderful glowing neon light.  All of the light and magic is gone with some of these emulated versions these days - they're just a bunch of lines.

Battlezone really did look brilliant with it's glowing vectors.
