And just thinking of a good resolution to set the game... I was going to go with 320x200, but thought that might be too high res for an 80's game... so googling around and found this: https://www.arcade-museum.com/monitor.html#R

Rampage Arcade 1986 - Standard Monitor -  336 x 240

PacMan Arcade 1980 - Standard Monitor -  336 x 240

Higher than I thought for that time...

Street Fighter 2 (1991) - 384×224

And for Super Street Fighter 2 (1993) using the CP System II - 384 × 224  with over scan of 512×262

Anyone started work yet, and got anything worth showing?

Who's doing something but keeping it close to their chests.

Curious how many of us are having a go this time, as we usually end up with maybe two thirds of them turning into a game at the end.

So far no worklogs or anything like that, so we're all going to announce what they're up to a bit further in? :)

I'll spill what I'm doing probably over the weekend. I could show a few things now but, as I'm going back to the good old Vic 20 days, I'd rather have maybe some kind of YouTube video to show it in action, as I'm working with very Vic style graphics so static screens aren't really going to impress anyone.

I'm going with Wardner/pyros by Toaplan and published by Taito in 1987.
Already 3 levels in with 3 more to go.
It's a thing that doe's when it don't..

Still percolating ideas, procrastination is the thief of time.

Which isn't ideal - but hey ho, there you go!

Not to mention the amount of home systems that were around at the time, not just arcade.

Just had a little look at that game. It looks kinda Ghosts and Goblins like. Same kind of play style. Maybe you should have gone for that one. Much more well known :)

71 days is all you have. It's not as long as you might think.

I always end up rushing at the end and drop stuff that I want to include in my games because I slow down a bit in the middle sometimes between the start and end dates. Consciously trying to avoid that this time by working at least a couple of hours every evening ticking bits off. The last 5% always takes the same amount of time as the first 95%, I've always found.

@Xerra I may have to do the ghosts and goblins thing, that game was hard as nails from what I remember.

I do like this compo's theme, but if I do make & submit a game, it'll be very bare-bones. Time is so limited these days.

There was a game I used to play on my Acorn Electron called "Frenzy" which I quite enjoyed, so perhaps something along those lines.

Decision day for me is Oct 1st.

QuoteThe 80's, what a great decade for the boom of computer and console gaming. For this competition pick any game you loved from the 80's and make your version of the game or a game inspired by it. Of course we simply can't do a strict one-to-one clone as the copyright hammers will be out but you get the idea ( no copying / ripping names, graphics, sound etc ).
can i create a game inspired by one (or several) exiting game(s) of the 80's, with a similar gameplay, a similar graphics style, but with a different view ( 3d first person view instead of 2d top down view or 2d side view ) ?

Yeah, why not. The theme is inspired by, after all.

I've started making a variant (pretty close!) of frogger - it should have the same kind of look and feel (because my skill with graphics is pretty limited!) but I'm not limiting myself to a realistic resolution. At the moment it is redrawing the whole background (i.e. all the rectangles etc!) every frame, but I may need to draw it once, save it to memory and replot from there.... but on the other hand, computers are much faster now... ;D

Great idea. I always said I'd do some kind of take on frogger one day but just never got around to it yet. Just like Radar Rat Race. Been promising myself that one for years ;)

i am trying to create an helicopter game, with 3d perspective / third person view, but reproduce the gameplay / graphics style of 2 games of the 80's... 8)
