Great topic!!
I have a question. If I make a game in assembler for a retro computer and the end result is an .exe file for Windows, but in the emulator shell. Is this option allowed?

Yes, no problems with that as you're still providing an .exe file. What happens underneath in the deep dark recesses of 0 and 1's does not matter  :D

I've lost 48 hours already, looks like I'll have to relinquish 1st placed for a change  :o

Great theme, as an old Spectrum fan, no end of titles to choose from. Firebird software had some right ingenious titles....

Who can forget Fahrenheit 3000 ?

Cool!  8) So many great 80's games to be inspired by!

Quick Q: Is it only one game to base our entry on or could it be a mix? eg. Mario crossed with Kung Fu Master?  ;)

You can pick any game from the 80s and be inspired to mix it with another from the 80s.. The rules say it's allowed ;D

I already have a plan that does involve two games. A game and its sequel, in fact.

And I have an evenings worth of progress into it as well. It's the ideal opportunity to try out some new features in Gamemaker, and learn some stuff that I've been meaning to do for ages.

i just took a look at what were the video games in the 80's ( i was too young to play :)) )

and found this news about 'video arcade addiction' (1982) :

at least, at this time, the people were forced to go out of their rooms ! and could potentially meet others people in these arcade places...

Our arcades were a leisure park with food courts, rides, pools. We would also hold tournaments right through the 80's and 90's.
It was awesome.

Let's hear it then, guys. Who's got ideas, and who's still thinking?

Anyone started work yet, and got anything worth showing?

Who's doing something but keeping it close to their chests.

Curious how many of us are having a go this time, as we usually end up with maybe two thirds of them turning into a game at the end.

So far no worklogs or anything like that, so we're all going to announce what they're up to a bit further in? :)

I'll spill what I'm doing probably over the weekend. I could show a few things now but, as I'm going back to the good old Vic 20 days, I'd rather have maybe some kind of YouTube video to show it in action, as I'm working with very Vic style graphics so static screens aren't really going to impress anyone.

In my spare time (not much these days), I'm learning LibGdx and my normal games I create are based on:

* Pong
* Breakout
* Asteroids
* PacMan
* Super Mario

So once I've done that and create a super simple framework and utilities I'll select an 80s came for the comp  ;D
