Specdrum 2
« on: June 13, 2021, 18:08:55 »
Hopefully this works :)

This is a Specdrum Clone of a piece of software that was written in the mid 80s by two guys by the name of Alan Pateman
& Paul Henning 1985(c) CheetahSoft.
The software for its time was brilliant and was reasonably priced compared to the drum machines of its time ranging from £1000 - £3000.
The software was written for the Spectrum 48k and the Amstrad cpc464 Computers ,it came with an expansion port box with a wire that you could connect to a mixer or multi-track recorder.
You would load the software in via tape loading the main program and hardware code in first
and be presented with the main menu screen to begin your quest.
Other kits were available on tape also and they could be loaded in using the load menu inside the program.
At the time of writing the original tape on side 2 had some demos available , you loaded them in via the load menu again using
Load Dump (option 3)
it would then load in the playlist of songs created.
Returning you to the main menu you could play each song one at a time selecting each song as you go.
creating your own patterns was a little daunting at first but once you got your head round it , it became second nature.
Onto the Clone version , This version is very close to the original but with added and taken away features

Original                                                                                              Clone

Sync Facility                                                                                      Midi Out
No Auto Play for Dump                                                                         Auto Play For Dump
8 samples in memory                                                                           10 samples

4 kits                                                                                               limitless
no mixer or stereo control                                                                   10 channel mix and pan controls
no tuning facilty                                                                                10 channel tuning
no drum test page                                                                             Drum play live page
No Options Page                                                                               Options to set midi / internal samples and auto play
16 songs in memory                                                                          16 songs in memory

many other bits n bobs :)
so here is my take on it

there should be a file attached to this for windows 10 64bit

download the 7zip file extract it and install it
inside the folder where it installs to :- C:\Users\Public\Specdrum you will find the manual file written in word

This will get you going but to get you going now follow these easy steps

1) Once run you will be on the midi selection page , if you want to use midi please make sure you
plug in your midi device before running , but if you dont want to use it then press escape to enter into the main menu

2) it should be flashing a cursor at you next to the Song , please enter 1 and press enter
3) Now The Div/Beat Should be Flashing , here for now press 8 and press enter
4) On the menu using the mouse or keys select J
5) you should be on the Load Menu
6) Select 3 - Load Dump - A file requester should show up and please double click the file inside the folder
7) you will see the files load in
8.) you should now be returned to the main menu
9) now press O to enter the options page
10) Now Midi users if you have the midi connected you can select your midi channel on your device and in here you cna set it up to match the device
11) make sure your device is set to channel 10 and if you dont want to use the internal samples you can turn them off bu clicking the little box [ X ] and it should untick
12) Now tick the Auto Play Box and it will put a X in the box and then Press R
13) On the main menu you can now see Auto play on the right should say ON
14) Pressing D will play the play list in order until you press space
or when the playlist returns to Number 1
14a) if you start to play them and press stop half way through
the song you are on will start again but then the playlist will continue
Have fun

Let me know what you think , its just a blast from the past and its all been coded in blitzmax NG and its not an emulation

Now added scrolly messages to the bottom of the screen with information so you can follow the instructions

also added The Manual in PDF format

The Manual does need updating but it will get you going

This update now uses the MiniAudio with very low latency now a few users have reported to me its well fast.

*** midimaster *** well done and thank you for all your help

and a few other i can mention without your help this would not have been possible.
