Brucey

Hallo :-)

Unfortunately, I've been a wee bit busy recently trying to sort out a new job and relocation. I'm currently trying to find somewhere to live, which is lots of fun when you are 350 miles away ;-)

Generally I try not to let life get in my way, but at the moment things are a bit in limbo... I hope normal service to resume soon.

:o)

Good luck Brucey for your future. These things I consider big events in a life's time frame.

Henri

i code with Bmax, but I'm not old. More like middle age.

Add 1 to that list: I am a blitzmax coder as well. I've been mostly lurking so far. Don't know how many others there are 'under the surface. However I agree the site isn't anything like as healthy as the old one. One of the big pluses of blitzmax for me was the community. On the few occasions that I got stuck and posted a problem people on the old site were always happy to help.  I am not sure how good that support will continue to be with so few active blitz posters around. I think if I was a new user looking for a language to code this in particular would put me off taking up blitzmax. Its a real shame because it is such a well designed language - it has the right balance for me between power and ease of use: it is one of the few languages where the enjoyment of coding supersedes the frustrations of it.

markcwm

Hey greenvertical,

yes it was rather depressing looking at the stats to see how few people are here now. There wouldn't even be 10 people who are around to help with Blitzmax so that would be its weakest point as a language. A plus point is it's a mature language and most questions are answered on wasted.nz, which should be entirely searchable from Google soon.

Personally I wasn't a huge fan of Blitz Max.  It was a half-way house between BASIC and C++.  For me you need to be in one camp or the other, not an in-between language with a half hearted attempt at pleasing people of only 3 systems, then failing because Mark couldn't be arsed to support Linux properly.

Then the Blitz website (after many years) was taken down 24 hours after minimal warning.  Ignoring every request we made (and offering cash).  Mark does what he wants.

Wasted is an appropriate name I think, and I'm surprised people would ever support BRL after the shoddy way they have treated loyal customers.

Where as Qube has run this site well before, and now in a time of crisis has stepped-up and brought it back, with cash prizes for coding competitions and a real nice vibe here...And you criticise this very new website??

I've no interest in supporting BRL or going to that site.  Quite happy here, thank you very much :)

...I certainly didn't mean to criticise. I think Qube has done a sterling job of setting up a new site; It is a lifeline for Blitz.  Its just that it now seems to lack the critical mass it once had, evident both in terms of numbers of users and volume of blitz-related posts. Nothing to do with the site itself - I don't know what else can be done. Hopefully things will begin to pick up as it is still early days. I am wondering, however, whether to start delving into Python in the future. I would certainly avoid any language again which is so tied to a small operation like BRL where someone can pull the plug with impunity.

I preferred Blitz3d to BMax, wrestled with BMax for a while until Grey Aliens framework came out. I do still appreciate what can be achieved in Monkey X, even though those forums also went south. Yeah, the helpful community back on BBasic was a huge draw, I think quite a few have re appeared here. QUBE has done a great job with this forum ;)

I think most of the people who were active on BB are here.
That and there are 91 users here right now.

..i have used BMX actively, and i still does(maintaining things i have done before)..however, for few new projects im having right now  (non game related), i have replaced BMX with B4J, which is very fast, works on all targets without issues and its community is very very dynamic and helpful...as Steve pointed out, i have finished with BRL for good, as such blatant kick out less than 24hr for people who were there over a decade is just plain rude..and Mark complaining about expenses for keeping web site is bizarre, considering how many people instantly offered assistance , including me, to keep it up and running, but it was still put down..why? Probably his 'business' model, to shut up community which doesnt want to jump on to his new experiment and doesnt see point of paying for yet another language, while spreading 'negative vibe' about his attempts to 'make money'...in reality, all he ever needed to do is to keep up BMX, enrich it with proper 3D module and charge for any future module, whatever that may be..money will be there, community will be there and getting stronger and it will be all in one well recognized brand/web site..but again..no surprise really...

..main reason why im here is not related to any BRL product, but people i know for over decade from BRL forums..other than that BRL is dead for good, for me..

The only advantage the old sites had was the amount of previous posts. There wasn't much activity regarding BMAX/Blitz3D coding lately, same goes for the MX site. It was more about off topics. This forum and the CX forum have seen more activity since their apperance than the old sites had in years.
But I agree, if size of a community is important to you, then you are better off in other places.

I was rs22 on the BlitzBasic.com forums. I've been browsing this forum since the closure of BlitzBasic.com, but I only just registered an account here.
