I have tried very hard to use blender for modeling and find it horrible to use compared to wings3d. It just doesn't  work for me . so I've decided to use wings3d to make my models and blender for animation . So I've got the best of both worlds . Enjoy your day and may the force be with you .

I'm gonna chip in here and totally agree with you - I know all about Blender but it just doesn't do it for me either. Didn't get on well with maya either - Completely loved 3dsMax though

So you are not alone and don't feel bad. Join the club \o/

I love Blender... especially for basic modelling it is super efficient for me.

More advanced stuff is surely something you just need to "train" to get an at least slight grasp of it.

Everyone just starting Blender (coming from some more basic modeller like wings3d) will just step back as there are too many options to choose from, and other shortcuts etc.
But yeah ... just play a bit with Blender, create some little objects/model ... get used to it, get the hang ...

PS: I somehow would almost place a bet you did not "have tried very hard to use blender" ... you tried, tried a second time ... maybe a third time 2 yrs later ... and went back to the software you knew. Normal habbit of many people. But nothing I would describe as "trying very hard".
For me this surely would happen when opening a music creation software ... with the "ohh I want to make music too" approach and after watching some tutorials I already lost interest in dipping into this piece of software.

When moving an object about in wings3d i do it by xyz and not freehand . In blender I don't have this option and have to move my stuff about freehand and trying to join things up and get things in the right place is a nightmare. I will keep playing with it and see if I am missing something . just took a look at 3d max 1700 dollars a year .

Quote3d max 1700 dollars a year

Yep.  :o I used it for many years when it was paid for upfront with no yearly subscriptions. When my licence finally ran out a fews years back I didn't upgrade

?? uhmmm... you can snap to the grid by shortcut or enable it via mouse.
You can also limit the movement axix by pressing x, y or z. Or negate it with "shift x" (only move on y AND z). you can also use the gizmo to move elements.

Don't say you do not have this in blender ... especially not if you tried so hard :)

In the animation I simply select the object and press "g" (for "grab") so I could freely move the object. But if you need the mouse - just activate the move tool via icon, or enable the gizmo by selecting the second icon next to the one with "mouse cursor + eye". There you can enable the "move" gizmo to be visible all the time.

When moving via gizmo you can still temporarily enable snapping to the grid via "ctrl key" - or you do as shown in the animation and click on the "magnet" icon for permanent snapping (then "ctrl" would negate the effect).

If you want to move elements by specific values ... eg 10 metres on the x axis, just hit "g x 10" (grab to move, constrain to x axis, 10 ...metres). Or adjust the values of the element mathematically (on the right - transform location). You can even do maths in there (so enter "5 * pi" or so if you need that).

For alignment of objects to each other (so a face of obj1 aligns right on top of a specific face of obj2 you can do that manually or with some alignment-addons which ease the pain even more).

Thanks for the tutorial I seem to grasp it now . Pretty much the same as wings3d . I will build a model with it later for my game and see what I can do with it . Thinking a spider tarantula .

I love Blender. Well, the new version with the new UI. It's a complete package and for free. I bought AutoRig Pro for blender to make rigging easier and it mujst be the best plugin for blender that I've bought.

Now I understand how it works I think that's probably it for wings3d and lithunwrap. The ball is finally rolling with blender now . Is it possible to use it with just the mouse pad or is a mouse vital. When I say tried really hard I meant a few days. Silly really it was staring me right in the face and I just wasn't getting it . Thanks for the input .

I would prefer a mouse over the mousepad / trackingball - I never got warm with laptop controls.
Think you benefit from having easy access to two buttons (while I prefer 3 + mousewheel).

For normal stuff it is easier if you can access the keyboard easily with the "second hand" and the "mouse" with your main hand.

Blender also has a lot options for emulating 3 button mices.

Using a laptop + inbuilt keyboard/trackpad is in my opinion suboptimal - better attach a USB/BT-mouse so your hands do not stand in the way of the other. You most probably wont do 3D modelling when the free space is rare and the laptop actually has to sit on your knees. You always should prefer a comfortable working area.

If you have questions about Blender stuff  ... feel free to ask (for now :)) .

Thanks Ron . Any questions I have I will ask . So far so good though. Have a nice day.

You know I do have a question . A couple of days ago I was trying to put a texture ( some paint ) on my animation and after a few hours I did it and it was working in my game . However after hours of trying when I eventually did it I could not remember how I did it . I do know how to add texture within AGK now to do this but I really want to be able to do this within blender as I now know it can be done . So there it is , my question.

You can do vertex painting or assigning a material and in there a texture.

For textures make look good ("placed where and as required")  you need to create UV Mapping.

Well I've come to the conclusion that for me blender is better mainly because it is great for modeling and animation which wings3d sadly lacks .
I think if somebody wanted to take there first steps in modeling then wings3d might be a good option although in another way why bother when you can skip that and spend a few days getting to know blender . Have a most excellent day. May the force be with you. What I don't like about blender is it's complexity although for what I want it for it is fine , some of the modes I don't have a  clue what they do but for making models ,uv mapping and animation I am now fine with although it did take me 3 or 4 days to get to this point and had a little help along the way from one of the members on here in fact I felt like forgetting blender except for animation , however a push in the right direction and it's sorted . Thanks for reading .
