Repair of ATARI 1040 St FM's

So Ive stripped one down and visually it looks one 100% good :-X

ah! Pwr Supply fuse blown on main board. I thinking of changing it for a new one but why did it blow?

The power supply looks like a lethal death trap with Live AC Bus bars!?  :o

20250324_140745.jpg 20250324_140756.jpg

Further investigation shows that jumper J9 takes pin 1,2 5Volts+. pins 3,4,5 -Volts and pin 6 is 12Volts+

It seems the 12v may only be needed for the Floppy.

So i have a spare 5v and 12V power supply that could replace the original PSU to start with! As i dont like the look of it! ::)

Check that the capacitors are not showing signs of bulging, or any leaks. If some looks like the have been in there before. Check that they have to polarities the right way,
If you have the equipment. Desolder the capacitors and check them to see if they are in spec.
Then check the bridge rectifier.

Make sure that you have the right schematic for the PSU.

I don't have a schematic for it yet but ive used the 5v_2amp and 12v_2amp.

I had a white screen? Disconnected the floppy and VOILA Desktop is go! :P

Got a real horrible buzzing noise from TV-RF though? So ordered a retro lead and think ill get a GOTEK USB drive.

I think im just going to retro fit AC DC adapter on the old Power PCB tray.

ah need a mouse as well. Oh and ive got a load of CAPS ordered as well ;)

Okay, small problem with the rocker switch completely blackened with carbon!

Then my new modern Power supply in it's resting place! 2A 5V and 12V supply. By the way it's a lot lighter.

And now for part Deux or the other one i found! 8)

24 HOURS LATTER,

A good old Retro Re-bright! emm 40% Peroxide? Im pleased with the results but may do the function keys again!

GOTEK drive is on it's way and Retro Shack monitor leads also on the way!

The Keyboard on these have a great feel. All the retro mechanicalness without the loud Clanking. Im thinking of making the other into mini Atari-ST with RP-400 goodness? Keeping the motherboard for spares.

I used this stuff brushed on after cleaning with Oxydent the pink bottle and isopropoly to clean the case off before application.

Wrapped in cling film and place out in the Cornish sun all day!

I probably could of done with more time on the keys?

Thanks! I've a few retro machines that need some retro brighting - especially my Atari 800.

At 40% I think you would need an EPP licence to acquire that concentration of peroxide.

For clarification. 12%=40 vol. Basically means that 40 vol is is equal to 12% hydrogen peroxide. Now the last time I had to do any kind of stuff with chemicals was at school, and we're talking neally 40 years ago. But in general the volume is an indication of the amount of oxygen released as the hydrogen peroxide degrades.

Problem I have with the sun method is that I don't get much sun in the back garden, and I cannot put it in the front because it's open access.

Looked like Atari couldn't come up with a good name, so just called it The Operating System, acronym TOS.
Now me. I would have called it Atari System Services.
